Bosch Mahle Turbo Systems (BMTS) has founded a wholly owned subsidiary in China, responding to the continued market growth of turbocharged gasoline engines in the country.
As China headquarters, Bosch Mahle Turbo Systems (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. is located in the Mahle Premises. Initially, mainly turbochargers for gasoline engines with swept volumes ranging from 1 to 1.5 liters are produced for the local Chinese market in a new building comprising 5,000 square meters.
The installed production capacity is reported to amount to more than two million turbochargers per year, with the start of series production scheduled for the first quarter of 2015. So far, several customer projects have been acquired.
According to BMTS, the facility’s new machinery is fitted with high-precision equipment so that local production process steps can be adopted, with about 100 new employees to be trained for this purpose at the company’s main locations in Austria and Germany.
Furthermore, there is a research and development center, which has access to Mahle’s existing engine test benches and laboratory facilities. Hot gas test benches are also available at the new location. Another feature of the production at BMTS Shanghai is the integration of an end-of-line test in the assembly, where the turbocharger will be checked for functionality, internal and external leak tightness, correct assembly and a potential out-of-balance.
